The Hidden Meaning of the Wheat and the Tares (Most Christians Miss This)

A man crept into his neighbor's field at night and sowed poison among the wheat. When the servants offered to pull it out, the farmer said one word: No. Why would anyone let something he knows is wrong keep growing? The answer runs from a Roman law against sowing darnel to a murderer on the road to Damascus — and hidden inside it is one of the most merciful commands Jesus ever gave. In Matthew 13, Jesus tells the parable of the wheat and the tares, and most of us were taught it means "good people in, bad people out." But read slowly, the part that should trouble you isn't the enemy. It's the farmer. This video looks at what the tares actually were — zizania, the darnel grass Lolium temulentum, identical to wheat until the heads form and poisonous enough that Roman law punished anyone who sowed it. We look at why the roots being tangled matters, why Jesus says the field is the world and not the church, and why the servants are the only figures in the story he never assigns. Then we trace the Greek word for "let them grow" — aphete — and discover it is the same word as "forgive us our debts" and "Father, forgive them."
