In this episode of Masculine Containment, Alex Charfen sits down with Glenn Foden Bell, a member of the third Brotherhood Container joining from New South Wales, Australia.
Glenn came into The Brotherhood at one of the most difficult moments of his life.
For years, Glenn had pushed away physical pain, emotional pain, responsibility, and anything that made him uncomfortable. After losing his leg in an accident at twelve and living with chronic pain, compartmentalizing became a way of life. Eventually, that same pattern showed up in his relationships.
He describes himself before The Brotherhood as constantly activated, rarely present, and always looking for the next opportunity to escape, relax, drink, smoke, or simply do nothing. His partner and children repeatedly told him to stop yelling, while Glenn genuinely believed he was only getting loud.
Then his relationship fell apart.
Almost immediately after joining The Brotherhood, Glenn and his partner separated. But instead of going through the experience alone, Glenn suddenly had other men calling him, listening to him, sharing their own experiences, and helping him remain connected during one of the hardest periods of his life.
He also committed to the practices: walking, Time in Neutral, nervous-system regulation, and especially self-forgiveness.
Glenn describes his first self-forgiveness ritual as a massive emotional release. He continued practicing it week after week, and over time something changed. The constant mental chatter decreased. He became more present. Everyday problems stopped becoming emergencies. He could listen instead of react. And he developed significantly more capacity for his children, his work, his education, and his life.
His relationship did not ultimately reconcile, and that is part of what makes Glenn’s story important. Masculine Containment was not a strategy for controlling an outcome or getting someone back. It changed Glenn.
Today he describes himself as almost the opposite of the man who entered The Brotherhood.
This is a conversation about what happens when a man stops running from himself, begins feeling what he has spent years suppressing, and discovers how much life becomes available when he learns to be present.
