Raga Kaushi Kanada | Dilshad Khan | Sabir Khan | Sarangi | The Peninsula Studios Cousins Dilshad Khan and Sabir Khan carry forward the Sikar gharana of Rajasthan, a sarangi lineage originally under the patronage of the Maharaja of Sikar. Dilshad began training at six under his grandfather Ustad Gulab Khan and his father Ustad Nasir Khan, later refining his art under his uncle, the Padma Bhushan sarangi maestro Ustad Sultan Khan. Sabir, Sultan Khan's son, trained under his father and his uncle Nasir Khan; the family's court-musician lineage traces back to their great-grandfather Ustad Azim Khan Sahab in Sikar. They are accompanied here by Akram Khan on tabla. The sarangi is one of India's oldest bowed instruments, first mentioned by the 13th-century theorist Sarngadeva, and long prized for a tone closest to the human voice. Traditionally an accompanying instrument, it was Ustad Sultan Khan, alongside Ram Narayan, who helped establish it as a solo concert voice in its own right — a transformation Dilshad and Sabir now carry into a new generation. Raga Kaushi Kanada blends Malkauns in ascent with Kanada in descent, a vakra, intricately built raga that rewards exactly the kind of patient bowing this gharana is known for. Music Changes Lives. And good music is good music.
