A pupil can perform a technique in a drill. What happens when they need to decide when, where and why to use it?
In Episode 92 of the PE Insights Podcast, Nathan Walker welcomes teacher educator Ray Breed to explore games-based approaches and what it takes to create meaningful opportunities for learning through games.
Drawing on his experience in schools, coaching and teacher education, Ray shares practical ideas for developing skill, tactical understanding, enjoyment and teamwork.
Together, we explore:
• The relationship between practising a technique and being able to use it in a game.
• Organising learning around tactical themes that connect different sports.
• Designing small-sided games that give every pupil more opportunities to contribute.
• Using questions to develop decision-making, reflection and understanding.
• Supporting learning across physical, cognitive, affective and social domains.
• Introducing change gradually, listening to pupils and developing your practice over time.
Along the way, Ray reflects on being marked down for his tennis technique despite being able to play the game, and shares a school project that challenged assumptions about which pupils benefit from games-based approaches.
For primary and secondary PE teachers, coaches and teacher educators, this conversation offers practical starting points and plenty to discuss with colleagues.
