Public parks were supposed to belong to everyone. But during segregation, many Black American families discovered that “public” did not always mean public for them. Across the United States, Black families could be excluded from parks, playgrounds, golf courses, amusement parks, and other recreational spaces. In some cities, separate facilities existed for Black residents but received fewer amenities and less investment. In other places, officials resisted integration so strongly that public recreational facilities were closed rather than shared equally. Children could grow up only minutes from beautiful playgrounds and parks they were forbidden to use. Parents paid taxes supporting public facilities while having to explain to their children why those same facilities were reserved for someone else. This documentary explores the forgotten history of recreational segregation in America, the Black families who lived under these restrictions, the communities that created their own places of recreation, and the activists who challenged racial barriers in parks and amusement spaces. Freedom was not only about voting, schools, transportation, or employment. It was also about something as ordinary as taking children to a park on a Sunday afternoon. The park was right there. The real barrier was never the gate. It was the system that decided who belonged on the other side.
