Finally, we are visiting Crookes' Corner to see what the Limpopo river looks like after months of rain in the central and Northern parts of the country. It was something special to see, water and only water where there were sandbanks with crocodiles and lots of hippos in the pool where the Limpopo and Luvuvhu rivers come together. Being Easter long weekend, people flocked to this normally quiet part of the Kruger to experience the change in landscape as well as the rivers.
We are visiting the Pafuri picnic site and the bridge over the Luvuvhu river where a large herd of elephants crossed the river, including some really small ones. We spend the night at the new Baobab Campsite which is in the final phase of preparation before it opens to travelers It will be the ideal spot for overlanders, local as well as from overseas with their long-distance or rented 4x4 vehicles.
After this we will be heading past Mapungubwe to Ratho on the Western side to do their 4x4 routes before returning to spend a few days at Mapungubwe, doing some strictly 4x4 only routes.
Mapungubwe was a significant ancient African kingdom in what is now South Africa, flourishing around the 11th to 14th centuries. Located in the Limpopo Province, it's considered a precursor to Great Zimbabwe and a crucial Iron Age site. The area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its rich archaeological history and diverse geology.
This tour came onto our wish list a year ago when visiting the northern part of the Kruger and Crookes' corner. Having been to the west side at Ratho Bushcamps as well. we decided to do an East-to-West Northern Limpopo border tour and now this is it. We didn't expect all the rain this year and were surprised to see the full rivers in the north, going all the way back to the western side. We don't often see the Limpopo river in flood or at least full and the result of all the rain in these parts of the country. The veld is dense, everything is green and healthy.
