What if the goal wasn’t simply to avoid burnout, but to actively build your mental wealth? For many people, exhaustion has become normal. We wake up tired, rush into the day, deal with constant information, deadlines, emails and responsibilities, collapse into bed… and then do it all again tomorrow. Eventually, we stop asking whether this way of living is actually sustainable. In this episode of The Coaching Hour, we speak to Lauren Thompson from Capital 5 Consulting, founder of Lumora, a corporate mental wealth platform, and creator of the 5 Capitals of Mental Wealth framework. Her mission was born from her own experience with burnout and a belief that thriving, not just coping, should be the standard in every workplace. Lauren knows first-hand what happens when constant pressure becomes a way of life. After years in the corporate environment, constantly switched on and under pressure while also raising children as a single parent, she experienced burnout so severe that it brought her “to her knees.” That experience ultimately led her to ask a different question: Instead of waiting until people are struggling with their mental health, how do we help them build mental wealth? In this conversation, we explore: • How burnout gradually creeps into our lives without us recognising it • Why constant mental, emotional and physical exhaustion cannot always be fixed by simply getting more sleep • What happens when living in survival mode becomes our new normal • Why so many people are functioning on autopilot • The impact of information overload and chronic stress • Why once-off wellness days, workshops and initiatives may not create sustainable behavioural change • The shared responsibility between organisations and individuals for wellbeing • Why younger generations are facing very different sources of stress and overwhelm • Lauren's 5 Capitals of Mental Wealth: cognitive, emotional, resilience, purpose and growth • The importance of self-awareness in recognising your own triggers and patterns • Why purpose and identity matter when we are trying to move beyond burnout • The value of taking just five minutes in the morning before immediately reaching for your phone • And the power of the pause, creating enough space between a trigger and your reaction to consciously choose how you want to respond Lauren also challenges the way we traditionally think about workplace wellbeing. Organisations spend significant time developing people's technical capabilities, product knowledge and professional skills. But how much time do we spend helping people understand themselves, regulate their emotions, build resilience and function better as human beings? Perhaps sustainable performance requires us to change the question. Not simply: “How do we help people cope?” But: “How do we create workplaces where people have the capacity to thrive?” Because thriving shouldn't only become a priority once burnout has forced us to stop.
