In 53 BCE at Carrhae, he mastered the field by combining light horse-archers with armored cataphracts: a calculated feigned retreat, an unbroken arrow storm with camel-borne resupply, and a final heavy-cavalry charge. Surena personally timed the attacks from the front, kept his troops steady, used the dry ground and crosswinds to blind Roman lines, and with attrition tactics shattered the legions. Publius fell, Crassus’s army collapsed; Carrhae became a textbook of Iranian battlefield ingenuity. Sources differ on his fate; many say Orodes II, wary of his influence, had him removed. Yet Surena endures as a master of the field—a pragmatic hero who understood risk, logistics, and how to pass calm under a rain of arrows to his men.
