Yerevan's history stretches back to 782 BC, when the Urartian fortress of Erebuni was built on the site, making the city 29 years older than Rome and one of the oldest continuously inhabited capitals found anywhere on Earth. The population grew slowly across the many centuries, reaching about 7,000 residents before eventually climbing to nearly 30,000 by 1873, and it officially became the de facto capital of all Armenia back on July 19, 1918. During the Soviet era, rapid industrialization and hydroelectric development along the Hrazdan River pushed the urban population to well over a million residents by the late 1980s, transforming the city entirely and permanently. That number fell sharply after the Soviet collapse, dropping to roughly 1,103,488 residents by 2001 amid a severe nationwide economic crisis, before finally stabilizing once again at about 1.1 million in more recent years. Zvartnots International Airport first opened in 1961, and the Yerevan Metro followed two decades later, opening on March 7, 1981, as one of the only subway systems found anywhere across the entire South Caucasus region today.
