Kirkby Lonsdale Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Cumbria, and around 12 miles southeast of Kendal, is the town of Kirkby Lonsdale. Geographically, Kirkby Lonsdale is situated in the Lune Valley, on the western fringe of the Yorkshire Dales, and on the border between Cumbria and Lancashire. Historically, it was part of the county of Westmorland prior to the formation of Cumbria in April 1974. At the heart of the town is the Parish Church of St Mary. This dates from the 12th century with additions up to the 16th century, and alterations from the 18th and 19th centuries. The church is Grade I listed. In 1227 a market charter was granted to Kirkby Lonsdale. Historic industries associated with the town include milling, tanning and cloth-weaving. In 1822 J. M. W. Turner painted the view of the Lune Valley from near the churchyard (featured at the end of the walk). This same view would later be witnessed by renowned art critic John Ruskin, who described it as 'one of the loveliest views in England, therefore in the world'. Thus, the spot became known as Ruskin's View. Kirkby Lonsdale has never had a railway station, although there was once a station bearing its name situated about two miles southeast of the town. This opened in 1861 as part of the Ingleton branch line from Clapham (North Yorkshire) to Tebay, and closed to passengers in 1954.
