Kindness of strangers is the thing Rebecca and I keep coming back to when we talk about our time in the UK, starting with a man at Euston station who noticed we were completely lost less than 24 hours after landing. He walked out from behind his counter, guided us to our platform, helped with our bags, and made sure we got a four-top seat before our train pulled away. We never got his name. We still think about him. That wasn't a one-off. This one gets into the difference between American customer service, performative, scripted, built around tipping, and the kind of quieter, more genuine kindness we found across England, on trains, in tiny towns like Hathersage and Keswick, from strangers who helped with luggage, made room for our kids, and never made us feel like we were in the way. We also get into something harder to explain: what it felt like to stop trying to shrink ourselves. In the US, taking up space sometimes meant being watched a little too closely. In the UK, we could just exist. We talk honestly about where that feeling came from, and about the adjustment period we've had figuring out whether that same sense of welcome exists here in Spain yet.
