Conan The Barbarian (1982): The Goodbye They Never Filmed And The Fight Hidden In Two Shots
Conan the Barbarian has three different cuts, and none of them contains the ending that was written for it. A farewell between Conan and Subotai, with a line about meeting again at the gates of hell, exists in the novelization and was never shot. And one of the arena fights, a woman in the pit, was cut down until only two shots remain, hidden in plain sight for more than forty years.
Also: the four-hour screenplay by Oliver Stone, the Austrian bodybuilder who waited for years, the director who threw half the script away, real swords and real blood in Spain, the mechanical snake, the score that refused to be pop, the preview that nearly earned an X, the three versions of the film, the scenes that survive on disc, and the king who never came: King Conan.
Which scene would you bring back first: the quiet talk by the fire, the goodbye at the gates of hell, or the fight in the pit?
