GARBHA-SANKARSANAT TAM VAI PRAHUH SANKARSANAM BHUVI RAMETI LOKA-RAMANAD BALAM BALAVAD-UCCHRAYAT “The son of Rohini will also be celebrated as Sankarsana because of being sent from the womb of Devaki to the womb of Rohini. He will be called Rama because of His ability to please all the inhabitants of Gokula, and He will be known as Balabhadra because of His extensive physical strength.” Srimad Bhagavatam 10.2.13 reveals three names of Balarama. He is Sankarsana because Yogamaya transferred Him from Devaki's womb to Rohini's womb. He is Rama because He pleases the inhabitants of Gokula, and Balabhadra because of His extraordinary strength. Srila Prabhupada explains that Balarama is also called Rama. Therefore, Hare Rama in the mahamantra may refer to Balarama without contradicting the worship of Lord Ramacandra. Jayadeva Gosvami speaks of Parasurama, Raghupati Rama and Balarama: all are Rama. Why Balarama appeared before Krishna is connected with His identity as Krishna's first expansion and the original guru. Although He is the second body of the Supreme Lord and is sometimes called Bhagavan, He always accepts the position of Krishna's servant. As Krishna's elder brother and friend, He protects Him while remaining absorbed in devotional service. Balarama manifests the land of Vrindavan to support Krishna's pastimes. The forests, ornaments, flute and other paraphernalia used by Krishna are manifestations of His serving potency. As Sesha Naga, He becomes the Lord's bed, supports the universes and continually speaks Krishna-katha. Before Krsna entered Devaki's womb, Sankarsana entered first to prepare a transcendental residence for Him. Krishna then ordered Yogamaya to transfer Sankarsana to the womb of His eternal mother, Rohini. Yogamaya could accomplish this service only after receiving the Lord's power and mercy. Maharaj also shares Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura's symbolic explanation. Devaki represents bhakti, while her six sons represent the six enemies of the mind: kama, krodha, lobha, moha, mada and matsarya—lust, anger, greed, illusion, pride and envy. When these enemies are removed through bhakti yoga and pure devotional service, the heart becomes a suitable place for Krishna to appear. A pure devotee remains alert to material association and seeks the association of sadhu, guru and Vaishnava. Such vigilance gradually reduces material attachment. The gopis who were prevented from answering Krishna's flute call remained absorbed in thoughts of Him. Through separation, longing and remembrance, they became purified. The class explains that Krishna entered the mind of Vasudeva and was transferred to Devaki without ordinary material conception. The Lord's appearance is entirely spiritual. A similar transcendental principle is described in connection with Nanda Maharaja and Mother Yasoda. Yogamaya and Durga are discussed as energies of the Supreme Lord. Those seeking material enjoyment often worship the material energy, while Vaishnavas pray to the Lord's spiritual energy for the opportunity to serve Him. Durga, Bhadrakali, Vijaya, Vaishnavi, Chandika, Narayani, Sarada and Ambika are among the names associated with her different manifestations.
