Coloured people" in South Africa refers to a multiracial ethnic group with diverse ancestry, primarily from the Dutch Cape Colony, mixing Khoisan, Bantu, European (Dutch, British, German, French), and Asian (Malay, Indian) people, forming a unique culture and language (Afrikaans) but often burdened by the apartheid classification that legally defined them as a separate, intermediate racial group, leading to complex identity issues today.
According to the 2022 census, Coloured people make up approximately 8.15% of South Africa's total population. Their provincial distribution is heavily concentrated in the Cape regions:
Western Cape: 42.1% of the province's population
Northern Cape: 41.6% of the province's population
Eastern Cape: 7.6% of the population
While a smaller percentage of the total Coloured population lives in other parts of the country, significant communities can also be found in major urban centers and surrounding areas, including:
Gauteng province (Johannesburg, Pretoria)
Durban
Port Elizabeth
Historically, the Coloured community in Cape Town was forcibly moved from traditional residential areas like District Six to segregated suburbs and townships such as the Cape Flats during the apartheid era.
Today, while individuals can live wherever their economic status allows, many still reside in these areas, which unfortunately continue to face socioeconomic challenges as a legacy of forced removal.
They are a significant population, concentrated in the Western and Northern Cape, with distinct cultural expressions and shared experiences of historical marginalization.
