Gold jewellery buyers are facing a fresh cost increase just ahead of the festive and wedding season. The BIS has increased the hallmarking fee on gold jewellery from ₹45 to ₹75 per article, a hike of nearly 66.7%, effective from September 14, 2026. The key question is: Will this additional cost make gold jewellery more expensive for consumers? At the same time, India’s gold imports fell sharply by nearly 58% in August, raising another big question — Have Indians stopped buying gold, or are they simply changing the way they buy it? With gold prices remaining high, consumers are increasingly looking at lighter jewellery, lower weights and old-gold exchange to stay within their budgets. Interestingly, even if jewellery volumes fall, higher gold prices could still support revenue growth for organised jewellers.
