GIANT KOMATSU PC1250 vs A MASSIVE DUST CLOUD! ⛏️🔥
This is what heavy-duty mining looks like!
A massive Komatsu PC1250 is working continuously to load huge haul trucks, but there is something impossible to ignore in this operation:
THE DUST!
Every bucket creates another cloud of dust as rock and ore are moved into the trucks. At times, the excavator and truck almost disappear behind the dust.
It looks impressive on camera...
But here's the serious question:
WHAT DOES THIS MUCH DUST MEAN FOR THE PEOPLE WORKING THERE?
Mining operators can be exposed to airborne contaminants such as mineral dust, respirable crystalline silica, and diesel particulate matter depending on the material and operation. NIOSH notes that harmful airborne substances in mining can contribute to respiratory and other health problems, while OSHA identifies respirable crystalline silica as a serious occupational hazard when workers are exposed to it.
That doesn't mean every visible dust cloud contains a dangerous concentration of silica. You cannot determine the actual exposure level just by looking at a video.
The real question is how the mine controls exposure.
Ventilation, dust suppression, enclosed and filtered operator cabs, exposure monitoring, work practices, and appropriate respiratory protection can all be part of an occupational dust-control program.
And now here's your challenge:
👷 OPERATOR HEALTH CHALLENGE 👷
If you were operating this Komatsu PC1250 for an entire shift, what would concern you the most?
A) The visible dust around the machine
B) Fine particles that may remain airborne even when they are difficult to see
C) Diesel exhaust and other airborne contaminants
D) All of the above
Think carefully before you answer!
And here's another question:
Does a closed excavator cab automatically mean the operator has zero exposure to outside dust?
Not necessarily.
Cab filtration, sealing, maintenance, air pressure, and the condition of the filtration system all matter.
If this machine is a Komatsu PC1250-11, Komatsu lists 758 HP, an operating weight of approximately 122–124 tonnes for the PC1250LC-11 configuration, and bucket capacities of 4.1–7.3 m³. Exact specifications depend on the machine configuration and model generation.
Now watch the loading cycle closely.
Look at how much dust is created when the bucket enters the material, when it swings, and when the load is dumped into the haul truck.
How would you control this dust on a real mining site?

Would you rather operate this giant excavator in a dusty environment...
or operate a massive haul truck?
And what do you think is the most important thing a mining company should do to protect operators from airborne dust?
