Drawing & Transferring (part 2) The drawing you create in this step will serve as your blueprint for your oil painting. Trying to plan out your painting directly on canvas can be intimidating. I have no patience for drawing on canvas. So I don’t and you don’t have to either. You can comfortably draw out your still life painting on paper first and then transfer it over to your canvas before you paint. This one extra step makes creating paintings less frustrating and easier. Working out an accurate line drawing allows you to limit your focus to a couple of aspects of your still life painting. You see, you don’t have to solve all painting problems at once. We’ll worry about colors and paints later. For now, just worry about creating an accurate line drawing. Right now we just need to collect form and light information. You’ll draw out the boundaries between the still life objects and any major color changes, shadows, etc. (Practice drawing, you’ll become a better painter in the long run!) Overall, your drawing should establish the color separations you’ll need when you paint. This is just one step in the painting process. If you want an accurate and beautiful painting later on, don’t rush the drawing! Once the line drawing is complete you’ll transfer it over to your canvas. All of this is demonstrated in the video tutorial.
