MASA TALK | Exhibiting modern art at Damascus Museum (1950-1980) with Mathilde Ayoub

In this session of MASA Talks, organized by the Atassi Foundation for Arts and Culture, art historian and PhD student Mathilde Ayoub (Cergy Paris University) traces the history and legacy of the modern art department at the Damascus National Museum. Drawing on exhibition publications and archives, the talk explores the MASA Archive and e-library as a key resource for writing a history of modern art exhibitions at the Damascus Museum between 1950 and 1980. Ayoub retraces the museum's evolution: from its founding and the need to shape a national Syrian identity, through the creation of the Salon d'Automne, to its internationalization in the 1960s and the artistic solidarities of pan-Arabism after 1967. The talk was followed by a live Q&A with the audience.
