Creating a safe, healthy, and sustainable school environment is essential for promoting students’ well-being, safety awareness, and learning experiences. The innovation programme, “Think Safe, Stay Healthy: Building a Better School Environment,” was conducted as part of the Service-Learning Malaysia–University for Society (SULAM) initiative on 27 June 2026 at Madrasah Idrisiah, Kuala Kangsar, Perak. The programme involved students from the Bachelor of Building Surveying (Hons.), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Seri Iskandar, and approximately 100 school students. It aimed to enhance students’ awareness and understanding of essential building safety, health, and environmental management practices through interactive and engaging learning activities. The programme focused on five key areas: energy conservation, cleanliness and personal health, fire safety and emergency preparedness, ventilation management and indoor air quality (IAQ), and ergonomic furniture arrangement. These topics were selected to introduce practical knowledge of the built environment and demonstrate how appropriate building management practices can contribute to a safer, healthier, and more comfortable school setting. The innovation was delivered primarily through interactive educational booths featuring games, quizzes, demonstrations, and activity-based learning designed to encourage active participation. Through these activities, school students were encouraged to identify potential hazards, practise environmentally responsible behaviours, understand basic emergency responses, recognise the importance of adequate ventilation, and appreciate the role of proper classroom furniture arrangement in supporting comfort and well-being. The programme also provided an opportunity for university students to apply their building surveying knowledge in a community-based learning environment while developing communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and social responsibility skills. By combining educational content with interactive engagement, the initiative sought to make building safety and environmental health concepts more accessible and memorable to school students. Overall, the SULAM innovation demonstrates the potential of collaborative, experiential learning to strengthen awareness of school environmental safety, health, and sustainability while fostering meaningful university–community engagement. The programme provides a foundation for encouraging safer habits and promoting a better school environment through knowledge sharing and practical learning.
