History records Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid as having died in Bolivia in 1908. Yet the bodies were never conclusively identified, and later accounts from people who knew Parker, including members of his own family and Josie Bassett, claimed that he had survived and quietly returned to the United States living until 1936.
