Both Edmund and Lucy have character arcs that have much to be learned from in their own ways- Edmund overcoming his trauma after being a traitor, and Lucy growing in bravery and learning to trust more in Aslan. Although they experience different trials, they both come out stronger, as individuals and as siblings, becoming true heroes of Narnia. It is good to have characters like these to look to for encouragement through our own trials, but even more inspiring are the stories of real people, the Saints, superheroes of God, one might say, who went through so many different trials and tribulations that a human being by themselves could never withstand. But they all persevered with the help of God and won their heavenly reward. St. Philomena, for example, the young virgin and martyr, who though attempts at her life were made multiple times, miraculously survived each of them until she finally was killed. Or St. Lidwina of Schiedam, who endured patiently for many years an incredibly painful illness. Or St. John of the Cross, who was imprisoned by his own fellow Carmelite monks for their disapproval of his attempts to revive the fervor of their order which had grown cold. Whether it be martyrdom, sickness, or persecution from others, these and many other Saints are beautiful examples of turning one’s pain into a means of growing in virtue, strength, and closeness to God. Their patient perseverance through moments of pain also show forth God’s immense power- because without His aid they may very well have given in to despair, but with Him by our side, it is possible to endure through anything. Keep fighting, and call on God in moments of struggle. He can work through our trials and use them for our good. He can make our sufferings, instead of a cause for despair, a source of merit and strength for us, if we trust in and allow Him to. Look to the Saints for edification and courage, to know we’re not alone, and that there have been others who, with God’s help, have persevered in their sufferings and learned to fly. Let their stories give us hope, that with Him Who is all powerful and loves us infinitely, we can become superheroes of God too. Prayer: Dear God, thank You for all You do for us. Help us to thank You and to praise You, even in those times of pain and struggle. It may not always be easy, there are times when it may feel that things are too bad for even You to make better, but please help us, even when it does feel that way, to still call on You in prayer and to trust in You. We may not understand why certain things happen, but we can trust that You do, and that You can make these things work for our good in the end, if we allow You to. Gold is only refined by fire, and we are only strengthened through experiencing those trials that will give us a reason and means to become stronger. Help us to turn our pain into a source of gaining merit for Heaven, and of loving You more and appreciating the power that You have, because we could never persevere in our trials on our own without You. Help us to remember that and to always remember to thank You for bringing us safely to shore through the stormy sea of life. Let us be encouraged to persevere and trust in You through the stories of Your numerous Saints, who were people, who suffered and were tempted just like us, but who flew to You in their times of tribulation. Please help us to fly to You when we are struggling or tempted, so that we can persevere, become stronger, grow those hearts of steel, and become the superheroes we have been given the chance to become through the redemption Jesus has won for us on the Cross. So that one day, our souls can fly up to Heaven to be happy with You for eternity. St. Philomena, St. Lidwina of Schiedam, and St. John of the Cross, pray for us. Amen.
