The Tragic Story of Rosemary Kennedy – Lobotomy & Half a Century Hidden Away Lobotomized at 23 on her father's decision, then hidden from the world for more than half a century. This is the tragic story of Rosemary Kennedy, the eldest daughter of Joseph and Rose Kennedy and the sister of President John F. Kennedy. Born in Brookline, Massachusetts in 1918, Rosemary spent her childhood trying to keep up in a family raised to win. She was presented to the King and Queen in London and found her happiest years helping small children at a convent school outside the city. But back in America, she grew restless and harder to manage, and in November 1941 her father agreed to a new and experimental operation. It left her unable to walk or speak clearly. For the next twenty years, no one from her family came to see her. One operation. One family secret. A sister who turned that silence into a movement. In this video, we look at what was done to Rosemary, who decided it, and how her story helped change the way the world treats people with intellectual disabilities. Tragic Secrets brings you the hidden stories of real people whose lives were kept quiet, told halfway, or never told at all. Subscribe for the next story.
