🎵 Kalòs gàr ho kíndynos is an original piece for SATB a cappella choir, composed in 2026 in memory of my father.
📚 For this composition, I have used a text in Ancient Greek by the Athenian philosopher Plato (427 BC – 347 BC). More specifically, I have drawn on passages 107c–108a and 114d of his dialogue 'Phaedo'. It is one of his middle-period works, alongside others he wrote in his forties, such as The Republic and The Symposium, probably after founding the Academy and returning from his travels to Sicily.
I had wanted for a long time to set a text from ancient Greek philosophy to music… This is not a particularly common practice, and there is very little repertoire available. It was quite a challenge! That said, I have not attempted to evoke the world of ancient Greece; musically, I have remained true to my own aesthetic. I wanted to convey in the score the sense of consolation that this text brings me during such a difficult time in my personal life.
'Phaedo' recounts the final moments of the life of Socrates, Plato’s beloved teacher. Following an unjust trial in which he is sentenced to death, Socrates prepares to drink the fatal poison, surrounded by his disciples. Years later, one of them, Phaedo, recounts the speech Socrates gave them to console them. According to Phaedo, Socrates spoke of the immortality of the soul, and of how no one who has been wise and good should fear this passage.
Yet, from these passages, I have chosen an apparently incidental phrase as the title of my work: Socrates says that believing in all this is a risk worth taking… For it is a beautiful risk (καλὸς γὰρ ὁ κίνδυνος, Kalòs gàr ho kíndynos).
Ultimately, philosophy is simply a kind of audacity. And it is beautiful, as is the way of life and death of those who look at the world philosophically: a beautiful, courageous gaze into the abyss of what we do not know.
