If you're visiting Brittany it can sometimes be hard to appreciate exactly what you are looking at in the landscape. Dating to the Early Bronze Age, a particular style of burial monument can be found in the Breton countryside which doesn't appear to have been an indigenous development.
These monumental homes for the ancestors give us tantalising glimpses of what people living over 4,500 years ago may have believed about life and death. They also offer clues about a migration of people who probably had their origins a long way from northwestern France.
This video looks at three examples of lateral entrance gallery graves or allées couverte in Brittany. It discusses their form, function and origin.
