Berwick upon Tweed

Today we explored the beautiful historic town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, right on the English–Scottish border. Berwick has a fascinating history and has changed hands between England and Scotland many times over the centuries. One of the highlights was walking along the impressive Berwick Town Walls, which date back to the Elizabethan period and offer wonderful views across the town, River Tweed and coastline. The town is also famous for its three bridges, each from a different era. The magnificent Royal Border Bridge, built for the railway in the 19th century, the Berwick Bridge (Old Bridge), dating from the early 17th century, and the more modern Royal Tweed Bridge, opened in 1928. Together they make a spectacular sight spanning the River Tweed. We also took a stroll through Spittal, the seaside village just south of Berwick. Once a popular Victorian holiday destination, Spittal still has a lovely traditional seaside feel, with its long beach, promenade and views back towards Berwick. Another wonderful day discovering the history, scenery and character of this beautiful corner of the UK.
