Off in the fringes of the medieval map lived creatures far stranger than dragons or unicorns. From the Bonnacon’s explosive defense to the man‑faced Manticore, medieval bestiaries were chock full of beasts that knights, monks, and everyday people genuinely believed were real. This video cracks open medieval illuminated manuscripts to show how Roman encyclopedias, early Christian symbolism, and jolly monks shaped the world of medieval monster lore. In these texts, every creature, real or legendary, carried a moral meaning. Topics Covered: • The Bonnacon, a curved‑horn beast with a burning three‑acre defense • Pliny the Elder and the monster‑filled Natural History • The Physiologus, the early Christian source behind medieval bestiaries • The Aberdeen Bestiary, one of the most famous gold‑leaf manuscripts in history • Symbolic readings of the Lion, Pelican, Beaver, Hydrus, Aspidochelone, Basilisk, and Manticore • How travelers like Marco Polo and Pausanias described real animals such as tigers and rhinos through the lens of myth This is the world of medieval bestiaries, where theology, folklore, and imagination merged to form monsters people swore existed.
