Do you need more spin to throw farther in disc golf after 40? In this TechDisc test, I measured my disc golf spin rate at 59.9 MPH to find out whether 1,074 RPM is helping my distance — or holding me back. This is Part 1 of my Disc Golf Distance After 40 spin test. After working on my nose angle, I started wondering if spin was the next thing costing me distance. My arm speed was already around 60 MPH, so instead of simply trying to throw harder, I wanted to know whether my spin rate matched my throwing speed. My TechDisc numbers: Functional speed: 59.9 MPH Functional spin: 1,074 RPM But is 1,074 RPM enough spin for a 60 MPH disc golf throw? Instead of guessing, I compared my TechDisc data to other players throwing at similar speeds. In the 50–60 MPH group, the median spin rate is about 1,020 RPM. At 1,074 RPM, I’m above the median and still inside the middle 50% of that group. But my arm speed is 59.9 MPH — right on the edge of the 60–70 MPH group. In that group: Median spin rate: about 1,187 RPM Lower edge of the middle 50%: about 1,113 RPM That means my spin doesn’t look like an obvious problem for my current speed, but it gives me something worth testing. Can I create more disc golf spin without increasing arm speed? And if I can increase RPM while keeping my speed around 60 MPH, will it actually produce more distance? That is what I test in Part 2 using the Par Save Snap Trainer, TechDisc, and a rangefinder. For Masters players, that’s the bigger question: how much distance can we gain by using the speed we already have more efficiently instead of simply trying to throw harder?
