Canada’s Appalachian Mountains Are Hiding Something Nobody Talks About

Canada has its own Appalachian Mountains, and they stretch much farther north than most people realize. From the strange orange Tablelands of Newfoundland, where rocks from Earth’s mantle are exposed at the surface, to 380-million-year-old fossils containing the early blueprint of fingers, Canada’s Appalachian region holds an extraordinary amount of geological and human history. In this Hidden Canada documentary, we travel through Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Quebec to uncover what has been hidden inside and beneath this ancient mountain system. We explore Gros Morne National Park and the Tablelands, where ancient mantle rock helped scientists understand plate tectonics; Green Point and its disputed geological “golden spike”; the remarkable Elpistostege fossil at Miguasha; some of the oldest known archaeological sites in Canada at Debert; and the ancient Wolastoq River corridor. But the story gets darker. We investigate the St. Lawrence fluorspar mines, where underground workers were exposed to dangerous radon for decades, and the 1958 Springhill mining disaster that trapped men underground for nine days. We visit Buchans, Newfoundland, once home to one of Canada’s richest base-metal deposits, and explore ancient rock in Cape Breton dating back more than a billion years. The journey also takes us into Mi'kmaw history and oral tradition at Kluskap Mountain, the mysterious Fireship of Chaleur Bay, the Chic-Choc Mountains of Quebec, and the failed search for another Norse settlement at Point Rosee. The Appalachians are usually associated with the eastern United States. But the mountain system continues deep into Canada, carrying hundreds of millions of years of geology, fossils, Indigenous history, mining disasters, legends and mysteries with it.
