Why did one New Jersey man's 2,417 club accounts end in a federal courtroom? The famous penny offer only worked if members paid the full-price bill that came after it.
Columbia Records opened its mail-order record club in 1955. By 1994, tape and record clubs handled 15.1% of American music purchases, and Columbia House revenue peaked at $1.4 billion in 1996. The offers grew from 6 records for $1.89 in 1963 to 12 albums for one cent in 1986 and 15 free CDs by 2000, while the promised purchases shrank. Labels held back new releases, and members learned to skip the bill.
What this video covers:
1950s: Why Columbia started a record club
1960s: The court record showing unpaid bills cost almost as much as advertising
1980s: How the $1.86 check and the response card worked
1990s: Why the clubs lost nearly half their share before file sharing
2026: How the last Columbia House stopped taking orders
If you ever forgot to mail back the response card, you may remember the record that came anyway. Tell us which album it was.
