Anton Dubrov knows Aryna Sabalenka better than almost anybody in tennis, and when he looked back at what happened against Coco Gauff in the French Open final, he did not attempt to protect his player with excuses.
His assessment was brutally direct: Sabalenka completely lost control.
Aryna entered the 2025 Roland Garros final as World No. 1 and appeared to have control after taking a dramatic opening set. But Coco refused to disappear. Gauff absorbed Sabalenka's power, extended rallies and repeatedly forced Aryna to hit another difficult ball.
As the match changed, Sabalenka's emotions changed with it. Gauff eventually completed the comeback 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 to capture the championship, while Sabalenka finished with a staggering 70 unforced errors.
But the biggest controversy came afterward. Sabalenka suggested Coco had won primarily because of her mistakes rather than because Gauff played an incredible match. The comments immediately created backlash and shifted attention away from Coco's championship.
Months later, Dubrov gave an unusually honest assessment of what happened. While discussing Sabalenka's improvement emotionally, he pointed directly back to Paris and admitted that Aryna “went crazy” and “completely lost control.”
For Dubrov, that moment exposed something Sabalenka still needed to improve. Her power, athleticism and shot-making were never the question. The challenge was learning how to recognize frustration without allowing it to take control of her tennis.
Sabalenka eventually reached the same conclusion herself.
She later called her post-match comments completely unprofessional and admitted that emotions had gotten the better of her. She personally contacted Coco to apologize and made sure Gauff understood that she believed Coco deserved the championship.
That response showed why Dubrov's criticism mattered. He was not attacking Sabalenka. He was identifying the weakness that could separate an extraordinary player from an even more dominant champion.
Dubrov even pointed toward Novak Djokovic as an example of someone who can experience frustration but still recognize those emotions and return his focus to the match.
For Sabalenka, the French Open final became one of the clearest examples of what happens when that balance disappears.
Coco won the trophy. Sabalenka lost control. And instead of hiding from what happened, both Aryna and her own coach eventually admitted exactly what went wrong.
