THE KNIGHTS TEMPLAR: Rise, Power and Mysterious Fall

On Friday, October 13, 1307, royal officers arrested the Knights Templar across France. The order answered to the pope—so why couldn't papal protection save it? The Knights Templar: Rise, Power and Mysterious Fall follows the brotherhood from the dangerous roads of crusader Jerusalem to the estates, financial responsibilities, and political conflicts that shaped its fate. Discover how a small religious community became an international military order, why personal vows of poverty coexisted with institutional wealth, and how battlefield losses changed the world in which the Templars operated. From Hugh of Payns and the Council of Troyes to Hattin, the fall of Acre, and Jacques de Molay, this documentary examines the evidence behind one of medieval history's most enduring stories. Inside this episode: • The Templars' origins and their mission to protect pilgrims • Religious discipline, papal privileges, and the growth of the order • Estates, deposits, and royal finances—and why “they invented banking” goes too far • Saladin, Hattin, and the loss of the crusaders' mainland strongholds • Philip IV's coordinated arrests and the politics of the prosecution • Confessions under pressure and the significance of the Chinon document • The suppression of the order in 1312 and Molay's execution in 1314 • The historical legacy behind stories of hidden treasure and secret survival The Chinon document records absolution and reconciliation with the Church. It was not a modern verdict declaring every accusation false. That distinction helps explain why the trial and the order's suppression cannot be reduced to a simple conspiracy story.
