Most of the time when I work on a song, it begins with a poem, a few lines, or simply a thought that will not leave me alone. The title usually comes later. This time, the title came first: “I Have Your Six.” In military language, to have someone’s six means you have their back—you are watching the direction they cannot see while they face what is in front of them. But I wanted this song to carry that promise farther than one position in one moment. It is in the circle drawn in the gravel during training. It is in the radio hiss, the quiet warning, the canteen passed in the dark, and the extra pair of eyes behind you when the miles are long. It is in all the small things that pass between soldiers on and off the battlefield without needing to be explained. And it is also what happens after the uniform is put away—when the battle moves behind the eyes, when the house is quiet, and when the hardest thing may be letting someone know you need them. “I have your six” becomes more than watching a friend’s back. It becomes the promise to answer the call, sit through the rain, and make sure nobody walks the long way home alone.
