What Happened to Strowger Switches, the Machines That Routed Telephone Calls Before Electronics?

Strowger switches once connected millions of telephone calls across America with nothing but relays, selectors, gears, and electrical pulses. Invented in the 1890s, the step-by-step switch helped eliminate the need for human telephone operators and became one of the most important technologies in the history of automatic telephony. This video explores the rise and fall of the Strowger switch, from Almon Strowger’s original invention to Automatic Electric, rotary dialing, and telephone exchanges across the United States. You’ll discover how step-by-step switching worked, why it dominated small-town telephone networks for decades, and why newer crossbar, electronic, and digital systems eventually replaced it. The clicking machines disappeared, but their idea still shapes every call we make today. #StrowgerSwitch #TelephoneHistory #VintageTechnology #RotaryPhone #Telecommunications
