For over thirty years, Sunnyside Amusement Park was Toronto's backyard. A publicly built waterfront resort on the western lakeshore where hundreds of thousands of working-class Torontonians spent their summers. It had a roller coaster, a dance hall, a boardwalk, and what was reputed to be one of the largest outdoor swimming pools in the world. In 1955, it was demolished to make way for the Gardiner Expressway. This is the story of how Toronto built one of its most beloved public spaces, who decided to tear it down, and what that stretch of waterfront has looked like ever since.
