When the Mississippi River rises high enough, America does something that seems almost unthinkable: it deliberately gives the river another way out.
Just upstream from New Orleans sits the Bonnet Carré Spillway — a massive flood-control structure designed to divert part of the Mississippi before dangerous water levels put communities downstream under even greater pressure.
But this isn't simply a giant dam with gates.
Its origins trace back to the catastrophic Great Mississippi Flood of 1927, when engineers were forced to rethink a fundamental idea: instead of trying to contain every drop of water, sometimes the safest solution is to give the river somewhere else to go.
In this TITANFOLD documentary, we explore how the Bonnet Carré Spillway works, why thousands of timber barriers are removed when the system is activated, how enormous volumes of Mississippi River water can be redirected toward Lake Pontchartrain, and what happens after that water leaves the river.
Because protecting one place can create consequences somewhere else.
This is the story of a nearly century-old piece of American infrastructure built around a surprisingly simple principle:
You cannot always stop the water.
Sometimes, you have to give it somewhere to go.
