This Photon Should Never Have Reached Earth — But It Did
A gamma-ray photon from GRB 221009A crossed roughly 2.4 billion light-years of space at an energy the universe should strongly absorb.
So how did it reach Earth — and could the answer reveal something unexpected about light, matter, or the laws of physics?
GRB 221009A, nicknamed the BOAT — the Brightest of All Time, became one of the most extraordinary gamma-ray bursts ever observed. But its brightness is only part of the story. LHAASO detected thousands of very-high-energy gamma rays from the burst, including photons reaching beyond 10 TeV.
That creates a remarkable problem. Intergalactic space is filled with the extragalactic background light, a faint cosmic fog produced by generations of stars and galaxies. At sufficiently high energies, gamma rays interacting with this background light can disappear through electron-positron pair production. Over billions of light-years, the universe becomes increasingly opaque to them.
Yet extreme photons associated with GRB 221009A reached Earth.
In this video, we explore the conventional explanations first — uncertainties in the cosmic background light and the physics of the burst itself — before examining more exotic possibilities involving axion-like particles, photon propagation through cosmic magnetic fields, and tests of Lorentz invariance and the speed of light.
The mystery does not prove that relativity is wrong or that a new particle has been discovered. But these observations give physicists an extraordinary laboratory for testing how light behaves across billions of light-years and at energies impossible to reproduce with ordinary experiments on Earth.
What explanation would you test first: a thinner cosmic fog, an unusual gamma-ray source, photon–axion conversion, or new physics affecting light propagation? Tell me in the comments.

Disclaimer: This video discusses active scientific hypotheses and unresolved interpretations. High-energy observations from GRB 221009A are real, but proposed explanations involving axion-like particles or Lorentz-invariance violation have not been established as confirmed new physics.
