Jesus Predicted the End—But Nobody Saw It Happen

What if one of Jesus’ most famous “failed prophecies” was never meant to function as a timetable for the end of the world? In this MythVision livestream, Derek Lambert sits down with Mark Souza to explore the provocative thesis behind *Let the Reader Understand: The Apocalypse We Missed*. Mark 13 warns of darkness, cosmic upheaval, the Son of Man, and the destruction of the Temple—but what if the Gospel stages that apocalypse during Jesus’ arrest, trial, crucifixion, and empty tomb? We examine “this generation shall not pass,” “let the reader understand,” the disciples sleeping through the watches of the night, the darkened sun, the torn Temple veil, the centurion’s confession, and Mark’s abrupt ending. Did Jesus’ prophecy fail—or did Mark transform apocalyptic expectation into a literary drama centered on the cross? We’ll also discuss Albert Schweitzer, Dale Allison, Bart Ehrman, realized eschatology, early Christian debates over whether the resurrection had already occurred, and why Mark may place the final responsibility for understanding the story upon the reader. Join us live and decide for yourself: did Mark hide the apocalypse in plain sight?
