Constraints in traditional manufacturing techniques have historically been a primary factor in the limited integration of freeform and aspheric mirrors into optical systems. Non-diffraction limited usages such as energy distribution and illumination applications were predominant due to these constraints. Now with the introduction of deterministic surface generation processes into mainstream production, the design, manufacturing, and metrology tools used in optical manufacturing are allowing for the production of imaging quality aspheric and freeform mirrors. The optical replication manufacturing methods are successfully meeting the demands for volume, high fidelity optical requirements while remaining cost effective for large scale applications.
