What happens when you're researching authenticity for your dissertation…and suddenly find yourself questioning whether you should speak up in a room where everyone sees things differently?
Welcome back to Becoming Dr. Owens: The Doctoral Diaries!
This week, I'm still organizing dissertation literature (because apparently these articles aren't going to organize themselves), navigating new professional roles, and learning what it means to be a beginner again after spending years becoming confident in my clinical work.
During a recent co-supervision experience, I caught myself second-guessing whether to share a perspective that was vastly different from everyone else's. And it got me thinking…
Can you truly show up as yourself when your perspective doesn't match the room?
In this episode, I'm talking about:
Finding my voice in new professional spaces
The unexpected connection between my dissertation research and my own experiences
Being an experienced therapist while becoming a beginner in higher education
Learning to ask questions without feeling like I should already know everything
Giving myself permission to be the oddball sometimes
I'm documenting the real journey toward earning my PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision—the research, teaching, professional growth, uncertainty, and everything in between.
No perfectly curated doctoral journey over here. Just the process of becoming.
Let's talk: Have you ever held back your perspective because everyone else in the room seemed to agree? What did you do?
If you're pursuing a doctorate, navigating a career transition, or learning how to show up authentically in new spaces, I'd love for you to follow along.
