The Idols We Build From God’s Gifts

Orthodox Christianity teaches that even good things, our life, family, work, possessions, and freedom, can become idols when we begin to treat God’s gifts as if they belong absolutely to us. In this Orthodox Christian reflection on Matthew 21 and the Parable of the Vineyard, we explore why this mindset can lead to anxiety, fear, and spiritual bondage. This video is especially for Orthodox Christians, Orthodox catechumens, inquirers, and Christians coming to Orthodoxy from Protestant or Roman Catholic backgrounds who want to understand the Orthodox spiritual life more deeply. Through Christ’s parable of the vineyard and its tenants, we look at the difference between seeing ourselves as owners and seeing ourselves as stewards of God’s gifts. The tenants received a vineyard, worked in it, and produced fruit, but forgot that the vineyard and its fruits ultimately belonged to the owner. The same temptation can enter our everyday spiritual life. We say: my life, my body, my family, my home, my plans. And when we believe that everything is truly ours to possess and protect, fear and anxiety naturally follow whenever those things are threatened. But the Christian life offers another way: to receive everything with gratitude, to recognize Christ as the true owner, and to live as faithful stewards of what He has temporarily entrusted to us. The result is not loss, but a deeper experience of peace, freedom, love, and gratitude in Christ.
