What happens to your financial statements when a building's value drops? If an ₹80 lakh property falls to ₹60 lakh, is it always recorded as a direct loss? In this session, taught in a Zoom online class format, we break down the accounting treatment for Property, Plant, and Equipment (PPE) revaluations under Ind AS 16 / IAS 16. We explore both scenarios: how to utilize an existing revaluation surplus first, and how to handle any excess decrease that hits Profit or Loss as a revaluation loss. What You Will Learn Carrying Amount vs. Fair Value: Understand the fundamentals of asset valuation in accounting. Case 1 (Utilizing Existing Surplus): How to offset a downward revaluation against an existing revaluation surplus from a previous upward revaluation. Case 2 (Excess Downward Revaluation): What happens when the drop in value exceeds your existing surplus, and how the remaining excess is routed directly to Profit or Loss as a revaluation loss. The Core Rule: Master the golden rule for downward revaluations—use any existing revaluation surplus for that same asset first, then send any excess decrease to profit or loss. Upward Revaluation & Depreciation: A quick recap of how gains are credited to Other Comprehensive Income (OCI) and how future depreciation is calculated using the new revalued amount.
