2006 Trackrod Historic Cup Rally The 2006 Trackrod Historic Cup provided another spectacular encounter for Britain’s historic rally cars, taking competitors into the fast and demanding forests of North Yorkshire. Held on 8 October 2006, the event formed round eight of the Armajaro MSA British Historic Rally Championship, as well as a round of the HRCR Classic Stage Rally Challenge. At the head of the field, Steve Smith and john Nichols produced an outstanding performance in their Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.0. The Yorkshire forest stages suited the Porsche perfectly, and the pair established themselves at the front of the historic field early in the rally. They maintained their advantage throughout the event to claim a convincing victory by 35 seconds in Category 2. Behind them, David Stokes and Guy Weaver brought their own Escort Mk1 home in an impressive second place his pace was evident throughout the rally. Category 1 was won by Watts Patrick - Davies Elgan in the Sunbeam Tiger. They were over a minute and a half in front of Calvert Neil - Calvert Michelle in their MK1 Lotus Cortina. The event was particularly challenging towards the end, with the later stages becoming increasingly rutted and slippery. Nevertheless, the fast Yorkshire forest roads provided exactly the sort of spectacle that historic rallying had become famous for, attracting large numbers of enthusiastic spectators. For Smith and Stokes, however, the day belonged to them. Their combination of speed, consistency and a trouble-free Porsche delivered a dominant 35-second victory, putting Steve Smith firmly back into contention for the British Historic Rally Championship title with just one round remaining. The Trackrod Historic Cup once again demonstrated why the Yorkshire forests were such a favorite venue for historic rallying: fast stages, spectacular machinery and close competition combined to produce a memorable day's competition.
