In March 2018, Toys R Us announced it would close or sell every store in America. Most people blame Amazon. But the toy store every kid loved was crushed by something else: about $5 billion in debt that a 2005 buyout placed on the company.
This is the full rise and fall of Toys R Us: Charles Lazarus and the baby boom, the backward R and Geoffrey the giraffe, the "category killer" that sold roughly one in four toys in America, the giants that arrived (Walmart and Target), the strange Amazon deal of 2000, the $6.6 billion leveraged buyout of 2005, and the bankruptcy that ended it all. Watch to the end to see what really killed it.
