Old axe restoration | Re-hafted.

Restoration of an old Elwell axe head, re-hafted with ash handle. I found the axe head a few years ago in an old shed. It looks like its been used as a wedge for splitting logs and had been given a good pasting with a sledge hammer. I gave it a bath in vinegar for a few days and cleaned most of the rust off to see if it was was worth saving before I started the process. It was quite pitted and I was tempted to leave a lot of the character in the metal, however as the butt was quite damaged I decided to regrind the lot and had to remove quite a bit of material. The eye was also a bit of an odd shape, so it would take some work when re-hafting. I didn't have any hickory, but as it won't get very heavy use I used ash instead. I'll be posting more videos soon.
