The Battle Beneath the Fog Written By: Rickey Phipps Verse 1 The sea lay flat as polished slate, the sky was cold and gray, We passed the Outer Banks before the breaking of the day. A wall of fog came rolling in and swallowed mast and rail, And all the engines seemed to hush beneath the ghostly veil. Chorus Oh, the battle beneath the fog, Where the dead still fight below, Steel against steel in the Carolina deep, Where the drowned will never go. And if you hear that siren call, When the night is dark and still, Turn your ship and pray you’re spared From the battle beneath the fog. Verse 2 I stood alone upon the deck, four miles from Graveyard Shoals, When something hummed beneath the sea and chilled me to the soul. The water turned a sickly green, though not a breath of wind, Then something black and rusted rose from where the depths begin. Verse 3 A submarine from nineteen-thirty-four came crawling through the mist, Her iron plates were scarred with war, her rivets cold and kissed By waters from another age. Her dead crew stood in line, Like frozen men upon her deck, still waiting for a sign. The great guns roared without a flame, the whole dark ocean shook, And torpedoes cut the water like knives through an open book. Verse 5 For twenty minutes war was waged between the dead below, With thunder rolling through the mist and ghostly fires aglow. No living hand could guide the guns, no sailor could be seen, Just ancient ships still fighting on beneath that haunted green. Then morning broke, the fog was gone, The sea was cold and blue, No ship, no wreck, no trace remained, But two pale watchers knew.
