They sounded too traditional... too different... too pop... or simply didn’t fit what Nashville thought audiences wanted. But then something changed. Radio listeners responded, word spread, and songs that had once been underestimated suddenly became impossible to ignore. In this video, we revisit 10 ’80s country songs that overcame doubt and became huge hits, featuring George Jones, Willie Nelson, The Highwaymen, Randy Travis, Rosanne Cash, John Anderson, Clint Black, Ricky Skaggs, Alabama, and Barbara Mandrell. Behind these familiar songs are surprising stories — from George Jones doubting “He Stopped Loving Her Today” to the unusual idea behind “Highwayman,” the traditional sound that helped Ricky Skaggs break through, and the distinctive style that allowed Rosanne Cash to step out of one of country music’s biggest shadows. You may know every chorus... But you might not know what happened before these songs became classics.
