On 11 July 1929, the people of Gillingham, Kent gathered for their beloved annual fete in Gillingham Park. The highlight was the spectacular "Fireman’s Wedding" – a mock rescue staged by local firemen, Naval Cadets, and Sea Scouts.
But in a matter of minutes, the performance turned to tragedy. A real fire broke out while 15 people were still inside the wooden and canvas “wedding house”. The crowd initially thought the screams were part of the act, until the horrifying truth became clear.
In this documentary, we explore the events leading up to the disaster, hear harrowing eyewitness accounts, and remember the bravery and heartbreak that followed. I also visit Gillingham Park today, and the restored memorial that ensures the victims will never be forgotten.
