#TristanDaCunha #MostIsolatedIsland #SurvivalStory #RemoteIsland In October 1961, the ground behind a small village on Tristan da Cunha began to rise. A volcano nobody knew existed forced the evacuation of all 264 residents to England — homes, jobs, hospitals, supermarkets, everything the 20th century had to offer. Two years later, almost all of them turned it down and sailed back to a volcanic rock in the middle of the South Atlantic, on purpose. This is the story of the most remote permanently inhabited place on Earth — over 2,800km from South Africa, with no airport, no natural harbour, and a supply ship that visits only about 10 times a year. We trace Tristan da Cunha's history from its first sighting in 1506, through shipwrecks, a disaster that killed 15 of the island's men in a single afternoon, the 1961 volcanic eruption, and the extraordinary choice its people made to come home.
