I was driving to visit my mum in Adelaide so thought it would be a good test of the fuel economy for for my Audi A7 Bi-Turbo Diesel. It is the most powerful and also the most fuel efficient vehicle I have ever owned. I put it in Efficiency mode and was averaging anywhere from 6.3 litres per 100km to 7.3litres per 100km depending on the prevailing winds. On the way to Adelaide I averaged 6.92 litres per 100km (41 mpg ) for a total cost of $413.40.
As a direct comparison, In 1979 i drove a Datsun 120Y across the Nullabor and we averaged 42mpg between Norseman and Ceduna travelling at 55-60mph or 95-100kph. We budgeted in 1979 on a total fuel cost of $120 from Perth to Adelaide between 3 of us ($40 each) and it was about right.
Point 1. being....the fuel cost to cross the Nullabor has only risen less than 4 x what it cost in 1979 for cars that had around the same rate of fuel consumption both then and now.
Only difference is that the A7 has 235Kw of power and a huge 650Nm of torque and I was cruising on average at least 10 - 15kph average faster than we did in the old 120Y back in 1979.
Fuel costs are way cheaper now than they were in real terms in 1979, i.e. $120 back then was way more than $420 is now. Everything else is up 10 fold plus in price!
Point 2. Can anyone can show me a car that on specification has more power and torque than the Audi A7 and gets better fuel economy?
I think not? I cant find even one that is close. I don't think there is one?
Don't talk to me about electric cars, because they emit twice as much carbon in the production process of the vehicle and the batteries before they even drive out of the showroom.
I can probably drive my efficient Diesel A7 another 100,000km before I emit as much Co2 as an electric car with a 400km plus range does just in the production process.
