The song was composed by Dimitri Tiomkin with lyrics by Paul Francis Webster and was released as a Columbia single that same year. Within The Alamo, the song helps provide a quiet, reflective contrast to the battle surrounding the characters, looking back on love, home, and better days. Tiomkin and Webster’s song went on to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.
